Who’s Responsible for Looking After Employee Wellbeing in Your Workplace?

FAQ

Under UK health and safety law, managers have a duty to identify and manage stress at work.  Addressing all areas of stress in your workplace is key in reducing staff levels of stress.

Bullying and harassment is behaviour that makes someone feel intimidated or offended. Harassment is unlawful under the Equality Act 2010.

Bullying itself is not against the law, but harassment is. This is when the unwanted behaviour is related to one of the following:

  • age
  • sex
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sexual orientation

Your mental health plays a huge role in your general well-being. People with mental health problems are more likely to develop physical health problems and vice versa. Being in a good mental state can keep you healthy and help prevent serious health conditions. It is widely accepted that positive psychological well-being can reduce the risks of heart attacks and strokes, whereas poor mental health can lead to many chronic illnesses including diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease and arthritis.

If you are struggling with a mental health issue, you might find you have an inability to function productively, to concentrate or to perform your usual daily tasks. Handling pressure or meeting deadlines can become more difficult. You may also find your usual interactions with work colleagues are a challenge.
