Course Content

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 state that all employers (including those with fewer than five employees) must provide ‘adequate and appropriate’ first-aid facilities, staff and equipment. To comply with these regulations, employers must ensure that an employee who is injured or taken ill at work receives immediate attention. Our Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed to help you to meet these legal requirements.

Our course will equip delegates with the skills, knowledge and practical competence they need in order to deal with a range of emergency first aid situations, and to act as the Emergency First Aider in their place of work.

In this section, participants will explore the key roles and responsibilities of an Emergency First Aider in the workplace. The course will cover the critical duties of assessing situations, providing initial treatment, and knowing when to escalate care by calling for professional medical assistance. You will learn the importance of remaining calm under pressure, ensuring your own safety, and understanding the limitations of your skills. Additionally, the section will touch on maintaining clear communication with colleagues, supervising casualties until help arrives, and properly documenting incidents. By the end of this section, you will understand your essential role in responding to emergencies effectively and responsibly.

In this section, participants will learn essential communication skills for interacting with casualties during an emergency. The course will cover techniques for approaching a casualty in a calm and reassuring manner, helping to reduce anxiety and ensure cooperation. You will explore how to assess the casualty’s condition by asking key questions and providing clear instructions. Emphasis will be placed on active listening, recognising signs of distress, and using appropriate body language. Additionally, the section will highlight how to communicate effectively with both the casualty and emergency services, ensuring vital information is passed on accurately. By the end of this section, you will be equipped to communicate confidently and sensitively with casualties in emergency situations.

In this section, participants will gain an understanding of how to minimise the risk of infection when administering first aid. The course will cover the importance of hygiene practices, including the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves and face shields, to prevent cross-contamination. You will learn how to safely clean and dress wounds, as well as how to dispose of contaminated materials properly. Emphasis will be placed on hand hygiene, and the role of sanitising agents in reducing infection risks will be explored. By the end of this section, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect both yourself and the casualty from the risk of infection during first aid interventions.

In this section, participants will learn about the essential items included in a basic first aid kit and their specific uses. The course will cover the different components, such as bandages, dressings, antiseptic wipes, and medical gloves, as well as how to use them effectively in emergency situations. You will also be introduced to additional items that may be required depending on the workplace environment, including items for treating burns, eye injuries, or choking. The section will emphasise the importance of ensuring the first aid kit is well-stocked, properly maintained, and easily accessible, helping you respond quickly and effectively in case of an emergency.

In this section, participants will be taught how to conduct a primary survey to assess and prioritise the treatment of a casualty in an emergency situation. The primary survey follows the acronym DRABC (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation), which guides first aiders in identifying immediate life-threatening conditions. You will learn how to ensure the scene is safe, check the casualty’s responsiveness, assess their airway, confirm their breathing, and check for signs of circulation. This systematic approach will enable you to quickly identify the most critical issues and take appropriate action to stabilise the casualty until further help arrives.

In this section, learners will gain the practical skills required to administer emergency first aid to a casualty. The course covers a range of scenarios, including how to manage life-threatening conditions such as severe bleeding, choking, and cardiac arrest. Participants will be taught how to provide essential care using techniques such as CPR, bandaging, and using a defibrillator (AED), depending on the situation. Emphasis will be placed on staying calm and effective under pressure while ensuring the safety of both the casualty and the first aider. By the end of this section, you will be confident in providing immediate, potentially life-saving assistance until professional medical help arrives.

In this section, learners will be trained to recognise and respond effectively to a variety of other medical emergencies that may arise in the workplace. The course covers a range of conditions, including strokes, heart attacks, seizures, and allergic reactions. Participants will learn to identify the signs and symptoms of these emergencies and understand the appropriate first aid responses for each situation. Emphasis will be placed on quick decision-making, maintaining calm, and providing appropriate care while waiting for professional medical assistance. By the end of this section, you will be equipped with the knowledge to confidently respond to a wide range of medical emergencies in the workplace.
